Vasectomy Procedure
Local Vasectomy Services
We provide quick and effective vasectomies to patients across Chicagoland and beyond. This minor procedure takes 30 minutes or less, so you’ll be in and out as quick as a Portillo’s run.
What Does a Vasectomy Do?
Vasectomies are a near-permanent form of male birth control. They work by preventing sperm from entering semen, which prevents pregnancy from occurring.
Our experienced providers perform vasectomy procedures without a scalpel. The entire process takes a half hour or less, and most patients drive themselves home afterward. You’ll likely feel good enough to treat yourself to a cake shake on the way.
Why Should Someone Get A Vasectomy?
We believe vasectomies are an excellent option for men who understand that the procedure is intended to be permanent and:
- Don’t want to have kids.
- Don’t want to have any more kids.
- Don’t want to deal with pregnancy scares.
- Want to enjoy sex with freedom from worry.*
Vasectomies provide freedom from worries about pregnancy after semen testing shows that there's no more sperm in your semen. Additionally,
vasectomies do not provide freedom from worries about STIs as they offer no STI protection.

What to Expect Before A Vasectomy
Now that you know how beneficial a vasectomy procedure can be, you may be wondering what to expect before, during, and after you get one. We’ll tell you exactly what you can expect during your in-office, no-scalpel vasectomy at Access Health Center.
Immediately before your appointment, you’ll need to do the following:
- Take a shower and clean your groin and genital area thoroughly. We recommend using an antimicrobial body wash like Hibiclens Antimicrobial and Antiseptic Soap . You can buy this over the counter in most stores.
- Prepare the area by shaving the front of your scrotum and the underside of your penis.
- Avoid taking any aspirin for at least 5 days before your vasectomy.
- Wear a jockstrap or a tight-fitting pair of underwear to your appointment. We recommend this for scrotal support post-procedure.
- Eat breakfast and/or lunch like you normally would before you come in.
What to Expect During A Vasectomy
What to Expect After A Vasectomy
After you get home, you’ll want to take it easy for the rest of the day. You’ll likely feel surprised at how quick and easy the procedure was, and lucky for you, recovery is nearly as straightforward. We’ve put together a timeline of what you can expect after your vasectomy:
Day 1
- Go home and relax.
Days 1-3
- Ibuprofen (Advil) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) alleviate this discomfort. Don't take aspirin for at least 2 days after your vasectomy procedure.
- Don't do any heavy lifting, go to the gym for a workout, or do any strenuous work for at least 2 days after your vasectomy.
Days 4-7
- Finish up your first week by slowly resuming your normal routine. This may include working out, lifting heavier objects, and/or doing strenuous work as long as you're not experiencing any discomfort.
- If you choose to be sexually active, use backup contraception. Vasectomies don't work immediately; keep using contraceptives until you're cleared by a semen analysis.
Weeks 2 to 12
- Slowly resume your usual routine at your own pace.
- Plan for at least 12 weeks and 20 ejaculations after your vasectomy to ensure all sperm is cleared from your semen.
Week 12 Onward
- After 12 weeks post-vasectomy, call our office at (630) 964-0000 to ask about semen testing. We'll give you a list of andrology labs in your area that perform this test. You can also use an at-home sperm test, which can be found in stores and online.
- After your follow-up semen analysis is complete and there are no more sperm found in your ejaculate, you can stop using contraception.
