These pills can help if you:

- Are simply late and want to regain control of your body
Missed period pills can be taken whether or not you are or believe you are pregnant. You don’t have to take a pregnancy test to find out, either.
What Are Missed Period Pills?
Missed period pills empower you to restart your period and/or end an early pregnancy. They’re safe and effective for use up to 12 weeks from the first day of your last period.
This medicine is made of misoprostol or a combination of misoprostol with mifepristone, which are the same medications used in medication abortions. Don’t let this scare you, though. They’re fine to take whether you’re pregnant or not.
If knowing whether or not you’re pregnant is a concern, rest easy. Missed period pills do not require a pregnancy test or pregnancy confirmation prior to use.
The Difference Between Missed Period Pills, Plan B, and Birth Control
Missed period pills are not emergency contraceptives (like Plan B, the “morning-after pill”) or daily birth control.
However, these medications may be a helpful tool in your birth control toolbox. When you visit our Downers Grove clinic, feel free to ask your provider for advanced provisions so you can stock up for future use.

Self-Care While You Get Your Period Back
As with any period, self-care is vital. While you prepare to bring back your period, there are steps you can take to alleviate discomfort (which is normal and to be expected). Here are some self-care tips to make the process as smooth as possible:
-
Prepare
Get ready to bring back your period by creating a quiet, calming, and comfortable place to rest. Some people need to rest for at least a few hours after taking their missed period pills. Cater to your needs during your time of rest by stocking up on water and your favorite snacks. Have comfort objects and emotional support items, or people, nearby. Ibuprofen and heating pads may be your friends.
-
Support
Some people like to be alone while their cycle is restored. Others don’t. If you prefer to have a support person nearby, here are our favorite options:
- Have a trusted person on standby for a phone or video call
- Invite a trusted person to hang out with you while you rest
- Have our phone number ready; we’re here for you
-
Breathe
Missed period pills are safe, effective, and approved by the FDA. They’ve also been in use for decades.
While you may experience a variety of emotions for a variety of reasons, know that you’re taking control over your body, you’re getting your period back, and it’s okay.
If you’re experiencing mild cramping, understand that it’s normal and to be expected. -
Talk
Our nerves get the best of us from time to time, and there’s no shame in that. Feeling nervous, anxious, and even afraid before taking your missed period pills is completely normal. If you need to talk at any point in the process, we’re here for you. Just give us a call at 630-964-0000.
-
Follow Up
Following up after you take your missed period pills is very important. Ensure you have your follow up visit scheduled so we can confirm that you aren’t pregnant after taking the medications.
