Constipation

Constipation is a common condition affecting millions of people. Constipation is having bowel movements less often than usual. Stool may also be difficult to pass. You may suspect constipation when there is a noticeable change in the normal pattern of bowel movements.
Some causes of constipation can be:

Not enough fiber in the diet
Lack of Exercise
Abuse of Laxatives
Ignoring the urge to have a Bowel Movement
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Schedule a consultation with one of our physicians if you are suffering from constipation. There are many different remedies to alleviate constipation and the physician will decide which one is best for you.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a procedure that permits direct and detailed visualization of the lining of the large intestine. It is accomplished by the use of a lighted flexible instrument. A colonoscopy may be recommended when there is unexplained rectal bleeding, history of colon cancer, or blood in the stool. Biopsies may be taken at that time for further evaluation if the physician feels it’s necessary.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a procedure that allows the physician to examine the lining of the esophagus (food tube), stomach and duodenum (first portion of the small intestine) to identify any abnormalities. It is accomplished by the use of a lighted flexible instrument. An endoscopy may be recommended for people who suffer from acid reflux, constant continuous upset stomach, unusual stomach pain or when there is a history of stomach cancer.

Ulcer Disorders

Millions of Americans suffer from ulcerative disorders of the stomach. Symptoms may include acid reflux, heartburn, and pain or burning of the stomach. Sometimes over-the-counter (OTC) medications help to alleviate the symptoms. When OTC medications fail to improve symptoms, you should consider being evaluated by a physician. There are many prescription remedies that can be given that will aid in preventing the symptoms of these ulcerative disorders. Sometimes, the physician will prescribe antibiotics, which have proven to be very successful in treating ulcerative disorders caused by the organism H. Pylori. A blood test can be done to test you for this organism. The physician will also recommend a change in the diet limiting the amount of citrus or acid containing food like tomatoes and oranges. Sometimes an endoscopy is necessary if the physician feels it is necessary.

Diarrhea

Our physicians are available to evaluate any person who may be experiencing diarrhea. Constant diarrhea is not considered normal and should be treated as soon as possible. Dehydration can be a serious side effect of continuous untreated diarrhea. There are over-the-counter (OTC) medications that can help alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea, but if it continues even with OTC treatment, that could be a sign that there is something else going on. Many things can cause diarrhea; from food that doesn’t agree with your system to a parasitic infection.

Colon Cancer Screening

If you have a family history of colon cancer, it is recommended to see a gastroenterologist for a consultation and evaluation once you’ve reached the age of 40. If you have symptoms like rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, you should be evaluated as soon as possible.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder of the colon. It can, however, affect other areas of the intestinal tract. When you have IBS, your colon doesn't contract normally. The contractions are often disorganized and sometimes violent. Another symptom of IBS is abdominal discomfort or pain. Treatment of IBS includes a stricter diet regimen that excludes any type of food that has been known to exacerbate the spasms. Addition of fiber to the diet and some medications may also be recommended.
